Service Description
We will begin at the car park for a safety briefing before setting out on our journey. From there, you will be taken up a gravel path through open pasture and we will arrive at our first stop, a wooden henge set up by the Woodland Trust, where I will tell you about the local tribes of the Iron Age. From there, we will enter the woods and head up towards the forts. The first fort is known as 'Moredun Top' ('Big Fort Top'), which features several distinct phases and a stone structure known as a 'broch'. After I point out the features and location of Moredun Top, we will leave the first fort and go to the other (which is named after Moncreiffe Hill itself, which means 'hill of trees'). There I will tell you of a battle that was fought nearby, after which we will return to the car park. Things to consider: Please wear sensible and firm footwear, such as walking boots or sneakers / running shoes. Wearing inappropriate footwear, such as flip flops, will lead to the tour being denied for safety reasons. From 5°C onwards ticks can start to come out, so if possible please wear long garments, boots or shoes with no skin showing or spray-on protection. Wearing sandals, shorts or skirts increases your risk of being bitten. Please check yourself thoroughly after (and possibly also during) the tour! Families are welcome! There are some steep edges around the hillforts, so please take care when approaching them and supervise children! Since the tours are in-depth and the terrain is steep and potentially dangerous, the recommended age for children to participate is 8 years and older. The minimum age for children is 6 years old and each child under 8 must be accompanied by one adult. The terrain can be very uneven, so take care! Your guide carries a first-aid-kit and is a certified first-aider, in case that something should happen. The walks are long, so please bring some hydration (and food if required)! If you bring your dog, please keep him on a lead! Moncreiffe Hill is accessible throughout the year. In the case of ice and snow, ice grips are recommended! There are a few minor steep ascents. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchairs access to the hillforts. There are no toilet facilities available on this tour. Duration: 2-3 hours Tour length: 2.8 miles Grading: Easy to Moderate / Level 2
